Week 13

1. What article did you choose to read for your article of choice? "Let Our Voices Be Heard" By Elder M. Russel Ballard
Describe the video resources you watched? I watched the video resource of a 15-year-old girl who met an older man in a chat room. They were conversed quite often. He showed up at her house and wanted her to go with him. She was lucky she survived because she could have died.
Write a paragraph describing what your most important "take-aways" were from the readings and video? My most important "take-away" was that I need to teach my children internet and media safety. I know that I want to have a clean home, clean from any immoral or violent media or internet. I will make sure that I have my computer in a public area in the home where there are people around it often. I will make sure I have safety blocks on my computer as well. I really want to make sure my children are protected and can feel safe at home.

Week 11

I learned quite a bit about TPACK. TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical And Content Knowledge. There are different parts of TPACK. The first is pedagogical knowledge which is just general knowledge and skills in teaching. An example of this would be a elementary school teacher. They have a general knowledge of all subjects and they have a great skill on how to teach those subjects to their students. The second is content knowledge which is having great knowledge of something, but not being able to teach it. An example of this would be a Scientist who is really intelligent, but can not seem to teach others about science very well. The third is technological knowlege which is knowledge with technology and understanding how to communicate to others how to use technology. An example of this would be my IPT teacher, Keith Proctor! There is one example of my past that I can think of where the TPACK model was used. My chemistry teacher in highschool was great! She was a chemist and very intelligent in chemistry. She was an example of content knowledge because she was very knowledgable in chemistry. She was great at teaching the subject of chemistry as well which shows she had great pedagogical knowledge. She used technology to us experiments and she would show us films and things to show her technological knowledge. There are different kinds of representations of technologies. There is textual, which is reading the text. There is visual, which is watching something. There is auditory, which is listening to something. There is dynamic, which is interactive. Last there is multimodal, which is using all of the different representations. I explored many technologies in this class. One that I enjoyed quite a bit was Google Earth. On Google Earth there were several representations of textual, visual, auditory, dynamic, and multimodal. This is amazing! Google Earth uses all representations. This would be so helpful for the students because each student learns a different way. One student may be a visual learner while the other is a textual learner. This is great for all students!

Week 10

What is the technology called? Kerpoof
What does it help you do? It helps you make videos and drawings on the computer. It is very interactive.
Where can it be found? www.kerpoof.com

What is the technology called? Google Earth
What does it help you do? It helps you explore the earth and to get an inside look on many specific places.
Where can it be found? You can download the Google Earth program onto your computer.

What is the technology called? Photostory
What does it help you do? It helps you create stories and slideshows.
Where can it be found? It can be found on the photostory program on your computer.

Week 12

I learned so much from watching the videos of the teachers using technology with their students. It was amazing how much the students learned and how captivated they were with what the teacher was teaching them. I loved how the teacher implemented another teacher and her class from a different state into the lesson. The students took pictures of spiders and posted them on the class website and then they shared the photos with a class in Missouri. This way they were educated about spiders in Missouri and in Virginia. It was also really neat to see the kids drawing on paint the vehicles they wanted to use for their "Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?" story. It just seemed that they were learning so fast and loving every second of it!

Week 9

What are some ways you can tell that you have successfully integrated technology into your lesson?
I believe you can tell you have successfully integrated technology into your lesson by seeing how it relates. If it enhances the learning to the lesson or relates to the lesson objective well then it is successful.

What do you feel technology should accomplish in order to be a legitimate addition to your lesson?
It should use interaction. It should be attention getting. It should expand their knowledge on the subject and help them become enthusiastic about learning.

What indicators can tell you whether or not you have chosen an appropriate technology for your lesson?
I think if it is easy enough for the students to use. I think it also needs to follow the lesson and add to the knowledge on the subject.

Virtual Field Trip

Week 9

  • What are some ways you can tell that you have successfully integrated technology into your lesson?

I can tell if I used the technology successfully if the students attention is on the lesson and they are able to understand and learn from it.

  • What do you feel technology should accomplish in order to be a legitimate addition to your lesson?

It should definitely support the lesson that I am trying to teach the students. It must follow what we are learning about and only add more education on the subject, not take away.

  • What indicators can tell you whether or not you have chosen an appropriate technology for your lesson?

I would say the attention of the students and if it is supporting the subject matter.

Week 8

  • What are some of the problems with learning TPACK skills?

It requires a lot of knowledge such as interdependent content, technological, and pedagogical knowledge

  • What is the main idea of the article?

The main idea implementing TPACK into activities that are planned into the curriculum that follows what they are teaching.

  • What are some of the ideas in the article that led you to your main idea?

It talks about how teachers goals are to have learning activities that go along with their curriculum. It talks about how they can do this.

  • What are some reasons that this article might be important for you as a teacher?

It would be importatnt for me to learn the importance of using TPACK in my classroom and as part of my curriculum.

Week 7

i. What is the role of technology in creating dynamic experiences for your students?
Technology brings a whole new view to the students. It creates interaction and variety in the classroom. It makes things more interesting and more exciting to learn about.
ii. What are some ways that technology might actually detract from student learning?
Technology could detract from student learning if it is too dynamic. It could just be too complicated for the students to understand or use. Therefore, it would just be a nuisance instead of interactive.
iii. What are three examples of effective technology use that you have used or experienced?
I feel that the digital story technology is definitely beneficial and would be a productive learning source for students. I also feel that just simple technology such as a computer is effective for the students because it helps them have hands on experience. I also feel that movies on a projector is successful as well because it grabs the students attention where they will be more receptive to what is being taught.

Week 6 Response

1. I feel that there are other good sensory experiences that would complement the use of a virtual tour. I feel like videos posted on the locations would be very attention-getting to the students. I also feel like posting pictures of the actual location would be beneficial as well. It would be neat to have different smells from that location that are common. It would be nice to bring in objects that they could look at and touch that are found in that specific location. You could also bring in food that is from there as well! This would be very fun for the students.

2. WWII Holocaust- I thought it was very informative, but just not enough variety amongst the different locations.

Celebrations around the world- I think this was really neat! I loved how they took you straight into the room where the Declaration of Independence is located.

7 Wonders of the World- I think this was my favorite one. It was very attention getting and informative about each wonder.

3. I think the upsides of creating a virtual tour is it is definitely different than the normal day-to-day routine. It is very fun and interactive. The students can learn hands on and get a feel for what the location is really like. The downsides would be teaching the students how to use Google Earth for the virtual tour.

Pros and Cons of Digital Storytelling

I loved this assignment! I think that would be useful in the classroom. It was neat that you could put any pictures and music you would like and narrorate. This would make it so entertaining for your students to watch. I would say one of the cons is doing all of the work to get it put together. It is definitely worth it though!

Google Earth

Google Earth has many great effects! You can zoom in and out on specific places. You can zoom in so close that you can see distinct details and you can zoom out so far that you see the whole earth. You can swivel to view from different points such as a flat view or an ariel view. This would be a great tool to use in class so when you are teaching your students about specific places you can show them exactly what it looks like. It would be great to use when teaching about geography!

First Blog!

This is my first blog!! I feel so old fashioned because I never have had one yet and I am pretty sure that every single person I know has one!
